Economic influence and repercussions
It is estimated that in the U.S.A. 5.5% of adults , one in twenty , suffer from morbid obesity ( 15 million people ).This represents around 9% of total spending on health care.
In Spain , the DORICA report , ( a study of dyslipedmia , obesity and cardiovascular risk ) , which was presented at the sixth SEEDO Congress in Cadiz in November 2003 , concluded that 13% of men and 18% of women are obese.
2% of these people are morbidly obese. According to the Delphi report , the cost of obesity to the health care budget in Spain in 1999 was 2,300 million euros ( 7% of total health care costs ).
